Marshall T. Parr, 82, Auctioneer 85 years
Marshall T. Parr, Grant Street, Washington, N.J., an auctioneer
for 65 years, died this morning in Warren Hospital after a
short illness.
Better known to auction lovers as Col. M.T. Parr, he
was recognized as the dean of auctioneers in northwest New
jersey. His title is the traditional honorary rank for old-time
auctioneers.
He began his career when he was 18 and opened an auction gallery
in 1948. In an interview in 1965, he said he had no idea how
many auctions he had handled. He had never raised his fees
since he started his career. He recalled that when he started
out, a cow sold for $35.
Mr. Parr was born in Blairstown, N.J. a son of the late Gershom
and Josephine Vandergriff Parr.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, Washington.
His first wife the former Amelia Chambers, died in July 1944
and his second wife, the former Stella Siple, died in June
1966.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Florence Read, Stroudsburg;
Mrs. Ella Lalley, Washington; Mrs. Pearl Cook, Hampton, R.D.;
and Mrs. Edith Shoemaker, Oxford R.D.; a son Gershom, Fort
Myers, Fla.; five brothers, Arthur and George, both of Phillipsburg;
Leon and Harry, Both of Easton, and Grover, Oxford; 25 grandchildren,
40 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the DeVoe Funeral Home,
Washington. |
