Old Veteran Passes Away
Former South Sider Dies At Las Vegas, New Mexico
Jackson E. Stocker, a native of Williams Township and a resident
of this city until about seven months ago, died on Saturday night
at his home at Las Vegas, New Mexico, from the infirmities of
old age, following a long illness. He was a veteran of the Civil
War and was prominent in G.A.R. circles. He was 90 years and
three months old.
Mr. Stocker was born in Williams Township on March 5, 1837
and at the outbreak of the war he offered his services and
served throughout the trying times of the battles of Antietam,
Spottsylvania Courthouse and Fredericksburg. He later reenlisted
and served with Company K of the 129th Regiment, Pennsylvania
Volunteers, under Captain Stoneback and Captain James Stilman.
He saw active service throughout the war taking part in the
three major engagements mentioned above and many minor skirmishes.
He is survived by his widow, Mary E. Stocker, one daughter,
Mrs. Robert Van Luvanee, of Bethlehem; three sons, Clarence
M., of Reading; Howard R., of Plainfield, N.J., and Oscar C.,
of Las Vegas. Also by 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held at Las Vegas with the American Legion
having charge of the services. |
