William H. Kelchner, Superintendent of Cemetery Many Years
William H. Kelchner St., 76 superintendent of Hay's Cemetery for many
years, was found dead at 7:30 a.m. today in the tool shed at the cemetery.
Henry William, 115 Apricot St. an employee of the cemetery, for the
body when he reported for work. Deputy Northampton County coroner Fred
Ashton issued a certificate of suicide by hanging.
Mr. Kelchner, who lived at 1000 Lincoln Street, started as a caretaker
of the cemetery April 9, 1906, and remained in that capacity since,
except for a period as caretaker at Lafayette College, from 1915 to
1924. Before working at the cemetery, he was employed at the Lehigh
Valley Railroad's boiler shop in Easton.
Born Aug. 3, 1880, in Williams Township, he was a son of the late
Milton J. and Elizabeth Hartzell Kelchner. He was a member of St. Peter's
Evangelical and Reformed Church and at one time was a member of the
church choir. He was a member of the POS of A Lodge 542, Wilson.
Surviving are his widow, the former Eva Helms; four sons, Walter A.,
Irvington, NJ. Lester B., Easton R.D. 4, an employee of the Easton
Express; William H. and Lawrence R. both of Easton; One daughter, Mrs.
Beulah M. Frankenfield, Easton; three brothers, Ellwood S., and Sterling,
both of Route 56, south of Nazareth, and Floyd, Bethlehem; two sisters,
Mrs. Flora Transue, Easton, and Mrs. Emma Edelman, Nazareth; 23 grandchildren
and 19 great-grandchildren. A brother and a sister died before him.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Strunk Funeral Home,
Easton
