Washington Man Killed
George Beam Victim of Railroad Accident at Stroudsburg
George Beam, 65, of Washington, was instantly killed about 1:30 o'clock
this afternoon when struck by an engine of the Delaware, Lackawanna
and Western Tracks at Stroudsburg. His body was cut to pieces.
According to the report of the accident received here Beam stepped
from behind several cars to a parallel track and was unaware that an
engine was approaching. He stepped directly into the path of the locomotive
and there was no chance for him to escape.
Mr. Beam had been in the employ of the D.L. and W.R.R. for nearly
40 years. He had expected to be placed on the pension list within the
next few years. He resided on Youmans Avenue, Washington.
Herman Wescott, of Stroudsburg, was engineer of the locomotive which
struck Beam. The latter had been engaged in shifting several cars in
the Stroudsburg yard and but a few minutes before the accident had
talked with Westcott. The engine was traveling backward and when it
struck Beam he was caught up by the bumper on the tender and draged
nearly 300 yards. The locomotive continue on for 500 yards, Westcoot
being unaware he had struck a man.
When Beam was picked up it was impossible to identify him. There were
no witneses of the accient. Identification was possible through a train
order in the pocket of his coat which bore his name.
The survivors include his wife and one son, Lester, of Washitngton,
and one daughter, Mrs. George Kaufman, also of Washington. |
