Dr. Barnet C. Walter
Dr. Barnet C. Walter, died at his home in Farmersville Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock of Bright’s disease after a long illness. Dr. Walter was one of the most widely known and active practitioners in Northampton county and had a very wide circle of acquaintances. The deceased was a son of the long since deceased William and Mary Bunstein Walter and was born near Easton, on June 15, 1832. He was descended from a long line of old resident of this county, his father having served with distinction during the war of 1812, and his maternal grandfather, Jacob Bunstein, also served during the revolution in 1776. His preparatory education was complete in the old Vanderveer School under Thomas Apple, which continued four years. He later taught school in this vicinity for six years. After teaching school he decided to enter the professional ranks and studied medicine under Dr. Peter Arndt, of Easton, for three years, when he entered Jefferson Medical college and was a student for three years, graduating in 1859. He established himself in Wagnersville, Bethlehem Township, for one year and in 1860 located in Farmersville, where he has resided since and actively engaged in practice, which he continued until within four days of his death.
Deceased was married to Camilla, daughter of the late Jacob Brunner of Easton, and the union was blessed with ten children, eight of whom are still surviving as follows: Dr. R. D. Walter and Mrs. Robert Hartzell, of Easton; Mrs. Howard Knecht, of Freemansburg; Mrs. Allen Woodring, of Bethlehem; Dr. William Walter of Bethlehem; Dr. Mitchell Walter of South Bethlehem; Cora and Jacob Walter, at home; also three sisters, Mrs. Samuel Wagner, of Easton; Mrs. Samuel Schnable, of Bethlehem township, and Mrs. Matilda Peters, of Bethlehem. The deceased was a member of the Farmerville Lutheran church.
article in Portrait and Biographical Record from a CD I Bought of SE Pennsylvania:
B. C. WALTER M.D. This prominent physician and skilled surgeon has been engaged in the practice of his profession at Dryland, Northampton County, since locating there in 1860, and is therefore one of the oldest practitioners in his community. He is in the enjoyment of a good income, and ranks among the well-to-do citizens of the county.
Our subject was born in this county June 15, 1832, and is the son of William and Mary [Bunstein] Walter, also natives of this county, while his paternal grandfather came from England, and on his mother's side of the house our subject is of German descent. The latter is now in her one hundred and fourth year, and is regarded as one of the oldest inhabitants of Easton, where she at present makes her home. William Walter was a patriot in the War of 1812, and died in 1861. He was an honest and hard-working farmer, and the possessor of a good estate, which had been accumulated by industry and economy on his part.
The subject of this sketch spent his boyhood and youth on his father's farm, in the meantime attending the common schools. Later he was a student in a private school in Easton, and a year after atttaining his majority he began reading medicine under the instruction of Dr. P. F. Arndt, of Williams Township, this county. He remained with him for about three years, when he entered Jeffeerson Medical College, from which he was graduated in 1859. The following year he located in this place, which wan then known as Farmersville, and has since continued to make it his home. He is therefore widely known throughout this locality, and his practice extends over a lage circuit of country. Besides giving his attention to his profession, the Doctor superintends the operation of his fine farm, consisting of one hundred and four acres, which bears all the improvements belonging to a first-class estate.
Dr. Walter and Miss Camilla, daughter of Jacob Brunner, were united in marriage. Their union has been blessed by the birth of eight children, namely: Robley, a practicing physician of Easton; Laura, the wife of Howard Knecht, who is living in this county; Delia, now Mrs. Allen Woodring, who makes her home in Bethlehem; William, a physician of the above place; Cora, at home; Mitchell, engaged in the practice of medicine at South Bethlehem; Nettie, at home; and Jacob, a student at Easton. In politics the Doctor is a Democrat, and in religious affairs belongs to the Lutheran Church.
I do have more info on this family, I am looking for info on all the children and relations of William and Mary Bunstein Walter.
