Dr. Mitchell Walter Dies at Bethlehem
Well-Known Physician Was Taken Ill While on Hunting Trip
Dr. Mitchell Walter, 65, a Bethlehem phyusician of long standing and at one time mayor of South Bethlhem, died yesterday at his home, 1835 Richmond avenue, that city. He had been hunting Hiawatha in the Poconos as the guest of his son-in-law, Dr. Paul Sterner, when he was stricken with a heart attack on Thursday last at 1 o'clock in the morning and was roved to the Rosenkrans hospital, East Stroudsburg. He was removed to his home in Bethlehem on Friday and yesterday morning suffered a second attack. He had been troubled with heart weakness since a serious illness three years ago.
Dr. Walter was born in Farmersville, this coutny, on May 2, 1867, a son of the late Dr. Barnet c. and Camilla Brunner Walter. He attended public schools and graduated from teh Easton Academy in 1888 and Medica Chirurgical College, Philadephia in 1893.
After practicing medicine with his father in Farmersvill e for a short time he moved to South Bethlhem on February 22, 1894, establishing an office at 23 East Fourth street. In 1908 he moved to 102 West Fourth streeet, where he continued his profesion for many years. He was amember of the Northampton County Medical Society and the American Medical Society.
In politics Dr. Watler was a Democrat and was mayor of South Bethelehem from 1913 to 1915, under the third-class city act until the courts decrred that the election whereby the municipality had become a city was illegal and the old borough form of governement was resumed. He was a great admirer of horses and possessed many of the best bred in this stables.
His first wife was Mrs. Katherine Wisser, who preceded him in death seven years ago. On
Augst 23, 1928 he was married to Miss Emma Keck, of Bethlhem, in New York City. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Mrs Susie Connor and Mrs. Paul F.Sterner, three grandsons, Mitchel Connor and Paul and Walter Sterner; on brother, Dr. William Walter and and two sisters, Mrs. Howard R. Knecht of Bethlehem and Miss Cora Walter, of Farmersville.
A brother, Dr. Robely D.Walter of this city, died on August 3, 1929. Deceased was an uncle of Congressman-elect Francis E.Walter, of this city..
Dr. Walter was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Bethlehem and the Knights of Pythias. He was active in the Wydnor Realty Company and a former director of the People's Trust Company, Bethlehem.
The funeral will be held on Thursday afteroon followed by interment in the family plot oin Memorial Park Cemetery, Bethlehem. |
