Young Man Killed Going to Work
Easton Youth Stepped in Front of Passenger Train at Redington
Fuse Plant
While crossing the tracks of the Lehigh Valley railroad at Redington
at 6:45 this morning to go to work in the fuse plant, William
Clarence Transue, 18 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Transue,
of 467 Mauch Chunk street, this city, was run down and killed
by passenger train No. 6, east bound. His body was badly mangles.
The accident was witnessed by a number of people, who also were
on the their way to work in the fuse plant.
Transue, who was formerly employed as a machinist's helper
at the Lehigh Valley shops went to work at the fuse plant on
January 30 last, and was engaged in packing shells. He left
Easton at 6:23 o'clock. When the plant was reached the passengers
proceeded toward the works over the east-bound track. While
crossing this track young Transue apparently failed to notice
the approach of No. 6. The engineer of the train is LeRoy Ritter,
of Lehighton.
A short time ago a serious accident was narrowly averted at
the South Easton depot when a train dashed by at terrific speed
while a large party of Redington employees were awaiting the
arrival of their train. The local train goes up to Redington
on the west-bound track, and as the plant is on the south side
of the tracks, employees are compelled to cross the east bound
tracks in order to get to the works.
Young Transue, although still a youth, was an experienced
traveler. He made two trips to California, besides traveling
to other distant points in this country. Besides his parents
he is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Floyd, Raymond,
Elsie and Mildred Transue, all at home.
