Aged Man Burned to Death in Shack
David W. Fox is Believed to Have Suffered Stroke
David Winfield Fox, 79 years old, was found burned to death at a small
lean-to, or shack, on the hillside not far from the home of his daughter,
Mrs. Howard Searfoos, with whom he resided at Raubsville, late yesterday
afternoon.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. A boy who had been
swimming, told Dr. Theodore Reichbaum, deputy coroner of Northampton
County, that when he first saw smoke and went to the scene, he saw
the aged man sitting against a log, his clothing burning, and before
he could reach him, he pitched forward and fell into a fire he apparently
had built at the shack. It is possible that Mr. fox suffered a stroke
while seated near the fire he apparently had built, that he then was
unable to prevent the spread of the flames that communicated with his
clothing. Dr. Reichbaum issued a certificate of accidental death.
Mr. Fox was seen last at about 9 o'clock yesterday morning, when he
visited at home of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Rufe. He said he was going to
walk to the home of another daughter, Mrs. Howard Eckert, who lives
about two miles north of Raubsville, along the river road.
He frequently took walks into the woods and up into the hills in the
vicinity of Raubsville, and it is believed he was taking on of these
little side excursions on his way to Mrs. Eckert's home, when the tragedy
occurred.
Mr. Fox suffered a stroke at Easter time, and since that time had
been more feeble than he had been previously, but he continued to take
daily walks.
He was a native of Williams Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
David Fox.
He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Reformed Church, Williams
township and was a member of the Knights of Humanity of Raubsville
for many years.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Howard Eckert and Mrs. Dora
Gallagher, of South Delaware River Road, and Mrs. Howard Searfoss of
Raubsville; a son, Forrest Fox of Coffeetown; a sister, Mrs. Emma Shipman
of Lyndhurst, N.J. and eleven grandchildren.
