Millard A. Stofflet, 91, of Telford, retired editor, publisher and educator, died Friday, May 23, in the Lutheran Community at Telford, where he was a member of the corporate board.

Formerly of Perkasie and Hamburg, he was the husband of Margaret (Bowen) Stofflet for 21 years and the late Helen T. (Taylor) Stofflet.

He was owner, editor and publisher of the Hamburg Item weekly newspaper for 44 years until retiring in 1978. During his tenure as publisher, the paper more than doubled its circulation and size.

Before that he taught German and mathematics for three years at Nutley (N.J.) High School, where he advised the Journalism Club, and modern languages and mathematics for five years at Lehighton High School, where he advised the school newspaper. He was also assistant editor of the Lehighton Press during the summer months.

He was a 1926 honors graduate of Lehigh University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Born in Nazareth, he was a son of the late A. Jeremiah and Henrietta (Uhler) Stofflet.

Stofflet was a member of St. Andrew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Perkasie. He was a former member of First United Church of Christ, Hamburg, serving as a deacon and elder on the consistory for 25 years.

A member of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association since 1934, he was vice president in 1937-38 and recipient of its award for "long and meritorious work in the field of journalism" in 1952. He was also an honorary member of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association.

Also a member of the National Editorial Association since 1934, he was named director of its advertising affiliate, the Newspaper Advertising Service, in 1949. He was elected treasurer in 1950 and later elected secretary. He was Pennsylvania campaign chairman of NEA's Rededication Committee in 1950 and its Pennsylvania representative for a number of years.

In Hamburg, he was a member of the Planning Commission and chairman of the Zoning Hearing Board.

He was a charter member and past president of the Hamburg Exchange Club and a director of the North Berks Chapter of the American Red Cross, which he served as campaign manager in 1945 and 1946.

He was a member of the Reading Chamber of Commerce, Berks County Chamber of Commerce and Historical Society of Berks County. He received the Most Outstanding Citizen Award from the Hamburg Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1964.

He was executive secretary of the Dutch Hex Tour Association since its inception and a former director of the Berks County Pennsylvania Dutch Travel Association.

Stofflet was a member of the Perkasie Historical Society, serving three terms as president, 1981-83.

He was listed in early 1950s editions of "Who's Who in the East."

Survivors: Wife; son, Ohio; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
