Ira C. Sherry Died At Home in Illinois
Ira C. Sherry, a former resident of Easton, a Civil War Veteran
and the oldest living former passenger conductor on the Lehigh
Valley Railroad died yesterday at Waukegan, Ill., in the 85th
year of his age. He had been in poor health for some time and
suffered from infirmities of old age.
Mr. Sherry was born in Mauch Chunk and was a son of the late
George and Susanna Wilhelm Sherry. when the Civil War began
in 1867, he enlisted in Company A, First Regiment, Pennsylvania
Volunteers. He then enlisted in CompanyF, 153rd Regiment, Pennsylvania
Volunteers, Captain Lucious Q. Stout, and was mustered in on
October 7 , 1862.
After the war, he entered the employ of the Lehigh Valley
Railroad as a trainman and was later made a passenger conductor.
He held this position until he retired about 30 years ago.
Deceased is survived by one son, Frank, of Waukegan, Ill.,
also by one sister, Mrs. Margaret Daly, of Philadelphia and
two brothers, Geroge B. Sherry, of Easton, and Samuel W. Sherry,
of Bethlehem.
Mr. Sherry at one time resided at 136 Spring Garden street,
this city. He was a member of the Masonic order and a member
of Lafayette Post, No. 217, G. A. R. Ira C. Sherry Division,
NO. 147, Order of Railroad Conductors, of phillispburg, was
named for him. The name was afterwards changed to Delaware
Division. The body will arrive here on Monday at 12:30 p.lm.,
and will be interred in Easton Heights Cemetery. |
