Philip Sandt Dead
Well Known Palmer Township Resident Succumbs to Pleurisy
Philip Sandt one of the best known residents of Northampton County, died at his home at Stockertown at 5:10 o’clock yesterday afternoon after a short illness of pleurisy in the sixty-second year of his age.

He was a son of the long since deceased Mr. and Mrs. Philip Sandt, and is survived by a widow, one son, Rev. Charles E. Sandt, formerly pastor of the Freemansburg Lutheran charge no, of Allentown, and two grandchildren, Helen and Philip Sandt.

Of a family of fifteen children there are now surviving the following brother and sisters of the deceased, Edwin Sandt, Mrs. Joseph Michael, Mrs. Edward Lerch and Mrs. Jacob Lehr, all of this city. The funeral will take place on Wednesday, the anniversary of his birth, at 9:20 o’clock at the house. Services will be held at the Forks Church, interment in cemetery adjoining.

Philip Sandt was a popular and well known resident of Palmer Township and has faithfully served as secretary and acting treasurer of the Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance company of Northampton county. He was recognized as a reliable business man, and his advice was frequently sought and carefully followed by many of his neighbors and friends.

He was a man of the strictest integrity, of upright character and good judgment, Few men attain such complete confidence of his fellows as that secured and held by Mr. Sandt. Amiability was one of his prominent traits and in all cases he proved himself a lasting friend to those who secured his consideration and respect. In his death his family has lost a loving husband and parent and the community a useful citizen.

He was born on March 15, 1838. His parents were the long since deceased Philip and Elizabeth (Schweitzer) Sandt, natives of this county. His family was founded in American by his great-grandfather John Sandt, who came to this country from Germany and settled in this county more than a century ago, in that portion now known as Forks Township. His father was a lifelong resident of Forks Township and died in 1854.

The deceased was born and reared in Forks Township and in boyhood alternated be when attendance at the district schools of the township and work on the home farm. For a time he was a student in a private school in Easton and later taught in both private and pay schools in the county.
For twenty years he conducted a store and lumber yard at Stockertown and enjoyed a profitable trade among the people of the village and surrounding country and gained the confidence of all with whom he had business relations. Having retired from business on account of ill health he was on August27, 1886 appointed secretary of the Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Northampton County. This together with the office of acting treasurer he efficiently served up to the time of his death.

He was a devout member of the Lutheran church and had served as deacon and elder in the Forks Congregation.
His wife was Miss Matilda, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wotring, of Stockertown.

The Argus renders sincere sympathy to the much bereaved family.
