Stuart R. race, 70, Educator, Lafayette Grad
Stuart R. Race, 70, of Lafayette, Sussex county, former supervisor of schools in Newton and a graduate of Lafayette College, died this morning in Newton Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Race was graduated from Lafayette in 1911. He received his A.B. and A. M. degrees from new York University in 1927. He taught mathematics and science in South Orange, N.J., High School from 1911 to 1918. He was a mathematics teacher at Lawrenceville School, N.J, from 1919 to 1921 when he became principal of West Bridgewater High School in Massachusetts.
In 1922 he became principal of the high school in Glen Ridge, N.J. Three years later he was made principal of Longview Elementary School in Hackensack, N.J.
In 190 he became supervising principal of Glen Rock, N.J. school until 1941 when he was made supervisor of schools in Newton. He retired in1954.
Mr. Race served in the Army during World War I. he was trustee of the Dennis Public Library in Newton and member of the Sussex County historical Society and new Jersey School Masters Club. He was past president of Ridgewood Rotary Club and member of Newton Rotary Club.
Surviving are his widow, the former Martha E. Camp; a son Stuart R. Jr., Las Cruces, N. Mex.; a daughter, Mrs. Joan W. Rowen, Falls Church, Va.; four brothers, Ernest, Belvidere, Paul, oxford, Carl, Hope, and Arthur Hazen and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, Newton. |
