E.S. Race Sr., 70, Owner of Warren Orchard
Ernest S. Race Sr., 70, of Hazen Summerfield Road, Belvidere R.D., owner and operator of the Ernella Orchard, died yesterday morning in Warren Hospital. Ill several years, he was hospitalized two months.
Mr. Race owned and operated the orchard with his son, Ernest Race Jr. he started dairy farming in 1917 and raised the first heard of purebred Holsteins in Warren County, he farmed until 1923 when he started growing peaches.
Mr. Race was a member of the board of managers of the College of Agriculture, Rutgers University and a director of the New Jersey and National Peach councils.
He was a past president of the New Jersey Horticultural Society and a member of the New jersey Agricultural Society. He was a director of the New Jersey Peach Industry Committee.
He was cited by the State Board of Agricultural for outstanding leadership in the field of agriculture on Jan 27, 1953, and by the New Jersey Horticultural Society for outstanding leadership in fruit growing in December 1959.
Born in Oxford, Mr. Race was a son of the late Henry and Alice Spangenberg Race. He reside all his life in Belvidere area. In 1915 he was married to the former Mary Ella Mills.
He was a member of Oxford First Presbyterian Church, Hazen, and was a 500year member o Warren Lodge 13, F&AM.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Louise, wife of Stafford H. Tonge, Wrightstown, N.J.; three brothers, Paul S., Oxford R.D.; H. Arthur, Belvidere, R.D., and Carl S., Blairstown, and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the MacFadden Funeral Home, Belvidere. |
