Dr. C.F.F. Garis, Ex-College Dean, Easton Native
Dr. Charles F. F. Garis, 75, a native of Easton and Dean Emeritus
of Union College, Schenectady, NY died yesterday at Ellis Hospital,
Schenectady, a few hours after he was admitted.
Dr. Garis was born in Easton Feb.1, 1881, a son of the late
Cornelius W. and Minnie Fleming Garis. he was graduated from
Lafayette College in 1903 with the degree of bachelor of philosophy
and received the degree of master of science from the college
in 1903. He did additional graduate work at the University
of Chicago. In 1923 he received the honorary degree of doctor
of science from Lafayette and in 1947 the honorary degree of
doctor of Humane letters for Union.
At Lafayette he attained on of the highest averages recorded
at the college. He won the Lounsbury Prize in Chaucer and commencement
prizes in Frend and astronomy. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa,
honorary academic society and also was a member of Sigma Nu
social fraternity at Lafayette.
He joined the Union faculty as instructor of mathematics in
1904. A year later he won recognition for reorganizing the
system of scheduling classes and examinations to enable students
to take related courses without conflict. In 1908 he was appointed
a full professor.
Dr. Garis organized the athletic department at Union, formed
the student employment bureau, organized the divisional system
of the college curriculum and played a leading part in improving
the college's financial support.
Dr. Garis was appointed dean of students in 1919 and dean
of the college in 1923. He served in that office until his
retirement in 1947.
He was a trustee of the Schenectady. He served on the Schenectady
Board of Education form 1937 until his retirement from the
college.
Surviving are is widow the former Rose D. Lansing, a daughter
Mrs. Lowell R. Ulray, Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, H.H. Garis,
Easton, and Harry Garis, Silver Spring, MD and a granddaughter.
Services will be held in Schenectady. |
