Well-Known Veteran Dies
John L. Clifton Was One of Last Survivors of Alfred Thomas
John Leonard Clifton, one of Easton's best known Civil War veterans
and one of the last survivors of the Alfred Thomas explosion, died
on Sunday evening at 10:30 at his home, 430 Cattell Street, College
Hill, from complications, after an illness of two weeks. He was 83
years of age. The death of Mr. Clifton leaves R.B. Carhart, of Phillipsburg,a
s the only survivors of the explosion of the boiler of the steamer
Alfred Thomas, in the Delaware River, on march 6, 1860, when 13 people
were killed and many injured.
Deceased was taken ill on electionday, November 4, and was unable
to cast his ballot. He was born in Allentonw and came to Easton when
a boy ten years old. He was a shoemaker by trade. During the Civil
War he first enlisted for three moths and then as a emmber of Campany
B, 51st REgiment, Pennsylvania Volunterrs. He was wounded in action.
One son survives him; Leroy W. Clifton, of Roselle Park, N.J. and
two daughters, Mrs. T. K. Ferguson, of Brooklyn and Mrs. L. E. McClellan,
of Easton. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Mary Eichlin, of Philadelphia,
and Mrs. William B. Fulmer, of Brooklyn and the following brothers:
Charles W. , of San Francisco, Cal.; Jacob, of Boise City, Idaho; Frank,
of Salt Lake City, Utah, and George and Allen Clifton, of Easton. Eight
grandchildren also survive.
Deceased was a member of St. John's Lutheran church and Lafayette
Post, No. 217, G.A.R. |
