William H. Clause, Former Easton Official, Dies At 48
End Comes In Hospital At Evanston, Illinois, Where He Resided
William H. Clause, 48 Years old, former prominent Eastonian, former
member of Easton City Council and Easton School Board, and a leader
in Masonic circles, died yesterday at a hospital at Evanston Ill, where
he had resided for the past three years. He suffered a stroke late
last week and then was admitted to the hospital.
Mr. Clause was a native Eastonian, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Clause
of 324 Philadelphia road. He attended Easton schools and was graduated
from Easton High School, where he gained fame as one of the greatest
centers ever produced at that institution. He maintained his interest
in football for many years and was an official at many football games
in later years. During the 1918 season while Coach James B. (Pat) Reilly
was in service in War I, Mr. Clause was coach of the Easton High School
Football team.
He was appointed to membership on Easton School Board in 1925, to
serve until December, 1927, to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation
of H. D. Randall, and was re-elected to the Board in 1927, for a six-year
term and served until 1933.
He was appointed a member of Easton City Council on April 17, 1934,
to fill the unexpired term of Charles A. Bealer, who died on April
9 of that year. In 1933 he ran for re-election. but was unsuccessful,
and left Council on the first Monday of January, 1938.
Active in Politics
He was active in Republican politics for many years and was a past-president
and life member of the McKinley Club of Easton.
Mr. Clause was past master of Easton Lodge No. 152, F. and A. M.;
past high priest of Easton Chapter No. 173, Royal Arch Masons; past
thrice illustrious master of Pomp Council No. 20, Royal and Select
Master Masons; past commander of Hugh de Payens Commandery No 19, Knights
Templar; a member of Rajah Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of
Reading, and a member of Easton Forest No. 35, Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
He also was a member of Easton Lodge No. 45, Loyal Order of Moose,
and of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, at Evanston.
For many years Mr. Clause was engaged in the taxicab business in Easton,
and was associated with the late George W. Stigreaves, of Easton, in
the operation of the Packard Taxicab Co.
Mr. Clause is survived by his widow; three daughters, Miss Evelyn
Clause, at home, and Mrs. Paul Kressler and Mrs Victor Gano, of Easton;
his parents; and three brothers and three sisters; Edwin Clause, Mrs.
Cecil Tigar and Robert Clause, all of Easton; Mrs. Stanley Pursel,
Phillipsburg; Alvin W. Clause, of Bethlehem, and Mrs. Brooks Betts,
of Wisconsin. |
