Retired Pastor, Native Of Easton, Dies Near York
Rev. Dr. C. E. Walter, 73, Had Been Ill For Long Time
The Rev. Dr. Clinton Elmer Walter, 73 years old, pastor emeritus of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, York, died on Sunday afternoon at his home at Edge hill, a suburb of York. He had been confined to his bed since Thanksgiving and never fully recovered from a nervous breakdown which occurred in 1934. He retired shortly after his attack and was made pastor emeritus.
The Rev. Dr. Walter was born in Easton on October 19, 1867, a son of the late VanSalen and Sally Ann Laros Walter. He was graduated from Easton High School in 1885 and then entered Lafayette College as a member of the class of 1890. He attended college for three years, had son of the leading parts in the first Calculus play, written by Alden march and participated in the Junior Oratorical Contest. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity and Franklin Literary Society.
Gettysburg Graduate
1in 1889 he entered the Lutheran Theological Seminary, at Gettysburg and was graduated in 1892. On September 25, 1892, he was ordained to the ministry at Lancaster and his first charge was assistant pastor at Trinity Lutheran church, Germantown, where he remained three years. In 1895 he became pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Hughesville, Pa., and was located there for three years. In 1898 he was called to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at York and was pastor there until his retirement in 1934.
The Rev. Dr. Walter served as a member of the Lutheran Board of Church extension. He was an Expert on Stamps and had a large collection.
His survivors
He married Miss Elizabeth B. Cox, of Germantown in 1895. A son, Clinton E. Walter Jr. of Haddonfield, N.J., and two daughters, Miss MarthaTyson Walter a technician at the York Hospital and Miss Coe Lawrence Walter, living at home, survived him. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Pearson, wife of the Rev. Philip H. Pearson, of 725 Cattell street, this city.
The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon in the Parish House, of St. Paul’s Church, York. The Rev. and Mrs. P.H. Pearson left this morning to attend the services. |
