C. R. Steinmetz Is Dead; Held County Offices
Served As Treasurer, Prothonotary and Wills Register
Charles R. Steinmetz, a former Northampton county register of wills, treasurer and prothonotary, died at 10:30 p.m. yesterday in St. Luke’s Hospital, Fountain Hill.
Mr. Steinmetz, who was 68, resided his entire life in the house at 343 Market St., Bangor. In ill health for four years, he was admitted to the hospital Wednesday.
He retired Jan 1, 1956, after more than 23 years in the service of the county.
He was a former Bangor borough treasurer and Bangor School director. Before his county career he operated the Keystone Shirt Co. in Bangor.
Earlier, he was employed in the accounting department of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and by the Bangor Trust Co. where he became assistant treasurer.
Mr. Steinmetz entered county service in January 1931 in the recorder of deeds office working there until Dec. 31, 1933. He served as register of Wills from Jan 31, 1934 to Jan 5, 1946.
He was county treasurer from Jan. 5, 1948 to Dec 31, 1951, and was prothonotary from Jan 3, 1952 until his retirement.
He was treasurer of the Bangor Jacksonian Democratic Club for more than 45 years. He was member of Trinity Lutheran church, Bangor, he was a Navy veteran of World War Il.
Mr. Steinmetz was a piano player and had an orchestra which he led. He directed a number of bands in the Slate Belt area.
Born Feb, 23, 1894, he was a son of the late Oliver L. Steinmetz and Mary Shook Steinmetz Steckel. He was graduated from Bangor High School in 1910 and from the churchman Business College, Easton.
Surviving are his widow, the former Adee heard; a brother, Dr. Clarence J. Steinmetz, and a sister, Mrs. Helen Steckel Jackson, wife of Raymond Jackson, both of Bangor. There are nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Funeral Home, Bangor. |
