Adam W. Sandt
Adam W. Sandt, one of the oldest and probably the best known barber in Allentown, died suddenly yesterday morning at his home, 127 North Fifteenth Street, that city. He had been ailing for six weeks with heart trouble, but had been able to take short walks, although admonished by his physicians not to exert himself. Mrs. Sandt was awakened by the coughing of her husband, and he died in her arms.

Mr. Sandt was a son of the late David and Mary Uhler Sandt, and was born at Sandt’s Eddy, Forks Township, 59 years ago. The family moved to Bethlehem, when he was a child, where his father, who at one time owned the Sun Inn, died. Soon after that his mother moved to Allentown.

At the age of 14 Mr. Sandt began as a barber’s apprentice in the shop of William Abel, best known as “Fancy Bill,” and when Mr. Abel retired to become an employee of the United States mint, Mr. Sandt became proprietor. The shop was located on Hamilton Street, beneath the Lehigh Valley Trust Bank, and Mr. Sandt conducted the business for 36 years. For the past eight or nine years he lived a semi-retired life, helping out at various shops, and his last place was at the City Hotel barber shop.

Mr. Sandt was a member of St. John’s Reformed Church, who pastor, Rev. Dr. Frederick Seitz, will officiate at the funeral services on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the house. Interment will be made in the Old Allentown cemetery.

Mr. Sandt is survived by his wife, Clara, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tilghman Statler, one daughter, Miss Mary H. Sandt, living at home; two brothers, Matthew Sandt, Allentown, and John Sandt, Easton, and three sisters, Mrs. Lucinda Harmony, Allentown, and Mrs. Edward Brinker and Miss Elizabeth Sandt, College Hill. He is also survived by a s sister-in-law, Mrs. Jane Davenport, who was a member of his family.
