Raymond E. Peifer Dies
Secretary Of Easton School District Retired in1947 after 35Years’ Service;
Was 70
Raymond E. Peifer, 70, retired secretary of the Easton School
District, died today at 7:35 a.m. in Easton Hospital. His home
as at 228 North 14th Street.
Mr. Peifer, who was school district secretary for more than
35 years, had been in failing health for some time. He was
admitted to the hospital yesterday afternoon.
He became secretary of the Easton School District on Dec.
1, 1911, and served continuously until his retirement on July
1, 1947. At the time of his retirement, he was believed to
be the oldest school district secretary, in years of service,
in the state.
Mr. Peifer was the first president and one of the founders
of the School Board Secretaries’ Association of Pennsylvania.
In February, 1947, four months before he retired, he was honored
by the association at the annual convention in Harrisburg.
On that occasion he received a gift and a copy of a resolution
passed unanimously to express the associations appreciation
of his services to the organization.
The resolution read by the secretary of the state body, called
Mr. Peifer the father of the association and one of the most… Children
of Pennsylvania and to the association.”
In December 1938m, Mr. Peifer was honored at a testimonial
dinner tendered by the Easton Teachers Association, in recognition
of his 25 years of service as secretary at that time.
A native of Williams Township, he was a son of the late Elmer
and Alice Moser Peifer. He was a lifelong resident of the Easton
area, for many years he maintained a summer home at Depue’s
Ferry on the Delaware River, across fro Roxbury, N.J. He lived
there permanently for five years before moving to the North
14th street address.
Mr. Peifer was a member of St. Paul’s Third Lutheran
Church and Dallas Lodge 396, F. and A.M. he also was a member
and for many years secretary of the Spartan Club, Easton.
Surviving are his wife, the former Anna Barron; two daughters,
Mrs. Jack May, of Easton, and Mrs. Neil Ruddy, of Belfast;
a brother, Howard, of Annapolis, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Luther
Kresge, of Chicago, and four grandchildren. |
