Lieut. H. B. Bast Former Resident Killed In Action
First Lieut. H. Brooks Bast, 27 a native of Phillispburg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter F. Bast, of Chadwicks, N.Y. was killed in action Nov. 2 in Holland where he was serving under Gen. Terry Allen with the Ninth U.S. Army, relatives here have been informed.

Lieut. Bast's brother, Sgt Clark K. Bast, 32, was in the African invasion in November 1942 and died Aug 5, 1943 in Cela, Sicily, following an operation for appendicities. He was a member of the Headquarters Company of Gen. George S. Patton's Third U. S. Army.

Walter Bast, father of the young men, was employed for a number of years at the Standard Silk Mill and left Phillipsburg about 15 years ago. The mother of the soldiers formerly was Miss Blanche Krantz, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Garibaldi Krantz, of 147 Ann Street, South Side.

Lieut. Bast attended the Phillipsburg schools and graduated from Chadwicks High School and the Utica School of Commerce. Prior to his induction he was employed as assistant manager of the R. W. Woolworth Company, in Waverly, N.Y. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus baseball team, of Chadwicks, and his brother also played with the same team.

He was inducted March 23, 1942 and sent to Fort Jackson, S.C. where he was selected to attend Officer Candidates Training School at Fort Benning, GA., and he received his commission in Nov. 1942. He the was assigned to the Timber Wolf Division in Camp Adair, Oregon. After traniing in Camp Horn, Arizona, and Camp Carlson, Colorado, he went overseas in Aguust 1944.

He is survived by his wife, Delores A. O'Brien Bast, of Chadwicks, a 10-month old son J. Blark Bast and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bast.
