Mrs. Hugh Garman Expires of Ptomaine Poisoning
Whole Family made Ill
Mrs. Garman Along Failed to Respond to Medical Treatment ?Deceased Woman w as Oldest Child of Late Ev. Preacher, Isaac Hess.
Unable to respond to the treatment that was given her, Mrs. Hugh Garman n o. 645 Allen Street, died early yesterday morning of ptomaine poisoning w hile the reminder of her family, all seized with the same illness recovere d.
The entire family on Saturday at string beans, canned and purchased sever al days before. On Saturday, the beans were prepared and eaten at the even ing meal.
Shortly after all became deathly sick. A physician who was called diagnos ed the case as ptomaine poisoning and administered treatment accordingl y. All responded except Mrs. Garman, who expired in great agony yesterd ay morning.
Beans of the same brand had been eaten in a lesser quantity on Wednesday a lso, but the slight illness, felt by all, but especially Mrs. Garman, w as no considered of any great significance.
Mrs. Garman was the oldest child and daughter of the late Rev. Isaac He ss and was born in Springtown Bucks County, on May 31, 1839. She marri ed to Mr. Garman in 1864 upon his return from the Civil War, the couple ha ving plighted their troths before the great conflict and remained tr ue to them. They were married at the home of the bride in Easton where h er father was then stationed, by Rev. Hoffman, another Evangelical clergym an.
Besides her husband she is survived by these children: Mrs. Charles J. Abe le, Mrs. Howard Haas, Thomas, Edgar, James L. and Charles E. of this cit y; Mrs. W., of Reading, and Mrs. Frank Fry, Bethlehem. Mr. And Mrs. Garm an resided in this city the past 30 years, during most of which time M r. Garman has been an employee of the Balliet Box factory.
Mrs. Francis Fehr, of Hellertown, is a surviving sister and three brother s, Titus Hess, Philadelphia, Elmer and Leo Hess, of Reading, also survive.
Mrs. Garman was a model housewife and beloved in the circles in which s he moved. She was a member of Emmanuel Evangelical Church.
The funeral services will be held at the late home, No. 613 Allen St ., on Wednesday at 1:30, conducted by Rev. S. T. Leopold and Rev. Edwa rd W. Remmel. Interment Greenwood Cemetery. |
