Clergyman Dead
Rev. Hess Passed Away in Reading on Thursday
Rev. Isaac Hess, a well-known retired Evangelical minister, died of drop sy and heart failure, Thursday morning aged 91 years, at the residen ce in Reading. He was ailing since November, prior to which time he was r emarkable active for a man of his advanced years.
Mr. Hess was born in Springtown, Bucks County, on Oct. 28, 1813. In 18 50 he went to Reading. His first charge was on the Womelsdorf circui t. In 1956 he accepted a call to the Eighth and Court streets church, Read ing. He soon became known as one of the popular Reading pastors.
He filled pulpits on the Lehigh circuit, Bethlehem circuit, Easton Circui t, Adamstown circuit and the Philadelphia circuit. He filled the Ebenez er pulpit, Reading, for a time, and the Kutztown Church. His last field w as Mohnsville.
All told he preached for a period of 43 years, having started in 1848 a nd retired in 1896. His wife, Hannah, died on Dec. 26 last.
These children survive; Leo, of Leesport; Emma, wife of F. L. Fisher, of H ellertown; Mary, wife of W. H. Garman, of Allentown; Isaac A., of this cit y; Rev. T. Asher Hess, of Philadelphia, and Elmer, of Reading. One brothe r, David, of Bucks County, also survives.
Mr. Hess had 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Death of Rev. Isaac Hess
A Widely-Known Retired Evangelical Clergyman
Rev. Isaac Hess, a well-known retired Evangelical minister, died of drop sy and heart failure, at 11:20 a.m. today, aged 91 years, at his residenc e, 715 North 9th. He was ailing since November, prior to which time he w as remarkbly active for a man of his advanced years.
His wife, Hannah, died several months ago. These children remain; Leo. Lee sport; Emma, wife of L. E. Fehr, Hellertown; Mary, wife of H. W. Garman, A llentown; Isaac, of Reading, and Rev. T. Asher Hess, of Phila., andElm er E. Hess, Reading, besides a brother, Durham Hess, of Bucks County, al so 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchldren.
Sketch of His Career
Deceased was the oldest clergy in the East Pennsylvania Conference of t he Evangelical Association living in the stte, and for a man of his age w as remarkably well preserved. Although he had retired from the active mini stry. Rev. Hess died no entirely give up preaching, as he occasionally occ upied the pulpit of Ebenezer or some other Evangelical chruch.
He was born in Springtown, Bucks County, on Oct. 28, 1813, on a farm th at had been the Hess homestead nearly 150 years, and he afterwards often p reached in the church adjoining the 100-year old stone house in whi ch he was born. The old house still stand and was build by his grandfathe r, Conrad Hess. Rev. Hess attended the shcool at his home and worked wi th his father, Jospeh Hess, on the farm until he left home to preach. He w as appointed an itinerant preacher by the annual conference of the Evangel ical Association at Allentown in 1848 and assiged to the Northamton circui t, one of the largest in the conference as it embrace Freemansburg, Easto n, Mr. Betehl and different places in Moroe and Wayne Counties. After havi ng been on this circut for about two years. Rev. Hess was apponted to t he Milford circuit, embracing Montgomer and part of Lehigh counties. Re v. Hess always rode over his circuit on Horseback, carrying a change of cl othing, writing paper, pen and ink, Bible and hymm book in his saddle.
After traveling the circuits for about 15 years. Rev. Hess was appoint ed to his first station, and that was Salem, 8th and Court, this city. Th is was in 1859 and he served his pastorate there for the limit of two year s. He conduected a number of successful revival meeting, some times havi ng as high as 29 and 40 penitents at the alter. From her Rev. Hess was se nt to Phila., and he remained there for six years. being appointed success ively to three different church, two years at each. From Phila he was se nt to Easton, after which he returned to Reading and assumed the pastora te of ebenezer church on North 9th, where he served as pastor for three ye ars. He was also stationed at Womelsdorf three years and at Lancaster t wo years. At the close of his term there, Rev. hess retired from the intin eracy. Some years ago he preached as a substutute a year at Mohnsivlle a nd since then he has had no charge.
While Rev. Hess was on the Womeldorf circuit he had 28 appointment which k ept him travling continually. It would be difficut to name a village in B erks and surrounding counties in which Rev. Hess has not preached when tra veling from one ciruite to another. He had a clear, strong voice and was r egarded as on of the best singers in the East Penn's conference. |
