Sayre P. Uhler, Easton Teacher 34 Years, Dies
World War I Veteran Taught English and Civics At Wolf
Sayre P. Uhler, 65, a teacher at Wolf Junior High School who taught in the Easton School District for 34 years, died yesterday at 6:30 p.m. in Easton Hospital.

Mr. Uhler’s home was at 133 Cattell street. He was taken to the hospital March 26. Although his health had been failing for the last five years, he continued his teaching duties at Wolf until the beginning of the Easter vacation last month.

Born in Stone Church, Northampton County, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. S. P. Uhler, He came to Easton with his parents at the age of two, and had made his home at the Cattell street address since that time.

He was a graduate of Easton High school and Lafayette College, the later in 1906. After his graduation from Lafayette, he taught school for a year at Hackettstown and for two years was on the faculty at Juniata College, Huntingdon.

In 1909 he returned to Easton t take a position on the faculty of the old Easton High School, where he taught until 1918. It was during World War I that he interrupted his teaching career to serve for two years with an anti-aircraft battalion of the Army.

After his discharge from the Army, he was an instructor in mathematics at Girard College and Temple University, Philadelphia for three years and for the next four years taught at Wilmington High School, Wilmington, Del.

He returned to the Easton School District in 1926, teaching history from then until June, 1940 at Shull Junior High School. Since that time he had taught English and civics at Wolf Junior High. Mr. Uhler’s career as a teacher covered a period of 42 years.

He was a member of College Hill Presbyterian Church, and was active in Masonic affairs in this section, Mr. Uhler was a member of Easton Lodge 152, F. and A.M; Easton Royal Arch Chapter 173; Pomp Council 20; Hugh dePayen Commandery 19, Knights Templar; Easton Forest 25, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Lehigh Consistory, Allentown Rajah Temple of the Mystic Shrine, of Reading, and the Forks of the Delaware Shrine club.

He was secretary of Easton Lodge for 30 years, retiring last February due to failing health. Mr. Uhler also was a member of the Lafayette Alumni Association, and Rice-Ebner Post 688, American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Anna Uhler, three children, Mrs. Anna Farina, of Fort Worth, Texas, Elizabeth DiVietro, and Sayre W. Uhler, both of Easton.
