William Thomas, Steel executive, Dies at 55 years.
William D.Thomas, 55 years old, president of the Thomas Steel
Corp., New York City, whose mother, Mrs. Sallie Thomas, resides
in the Packard Apartments, Fifteenth and Northampton Streets
this city, died on Tuesday of a heart ailment in his summer
cottage on the estate of the Sewance Gold and Country Club,
Hewlitt Long Island. His New York residence was at 46 Gramercy
Park, North.
In 1932 he was honored at the offices of the Swedish consulate
in new York by being award the Swedish Order of the Vasa,
First class. The presentation was mad by the consul in the
name of King Gustav of Sweden and in Sweden members of this
order have the rank of knight. He won his right to membership
in the order through continued service in the interests of
foreign countries in his position as president of the American
Association of Fine Steel Importers.
As president and general manager of the Sandvik Steel Company,
importers of products of Swedish steel manufactures, Mr.
Thomas became head o the importers' association at a thime
when foreignnations were protesting United States tariffs
on their products. He formerly resided in Freeport. L.I> and
was also associated with the Stanley Steel Works. Bridgeport,
Conn. He was a member of the New York Athletic Club. He was
born in Pottstown, a son of Mrs. Sallie and the late Herbert
D. Thomas. The family formerly lived at 216 North Tenth street,
this city.
Mr. Thomas attended Dickinson Colldge, Carlisle.
His mother is the widow of Herbert D. Thomas, He also leaves
his wife, Mrs. Belle VanGelder Thomas; a daughter, Mrs. W.A.
Drisler Jr.; and a sister, Mrs. William Bouton, of Bayonne,
N.J.
The funeral was held this afternoon at th parlors of Chester
Fulton & Son, Freeport, Long Island
