Sydney Stocker Ill, End his Life
Brooded over his inability to Provide for His Family and Took
Acid
Sydney G. Stocker committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid
at 11:30 last night at the home of his wife, Mrs. Mattie Stocker,
519 Wilkes-Barre Street. He lived about twenty minutes after
taking the dose. "Syd" as the deceased was familiarly
known, had not been in good terms lately with his wife, and for
that reason he had been occupying a room in Easton. The couple
met yesterday morning and after a talk it was decided that the
husband accompany his wife to her home last night. For some time
back Mrs. Stocker has been employed at the Jewel Theatre, earning
a livelihood for herself and two children - Ellwood, age 12 years
and Margaret, 5 1/2 years.
Deceased met his wife on Third Street at about 10:15 last
night, and together they started for the South Side. Stocker
seemed downhearted and repeatedly told his wife, that he had
decided to "end it all." " I can't stand this
way of living," the deceased said. He had been to see
a physician lately, so he told his wife, and had had been informed
that he was affected with tuberculosis. That was the reason
he had not been working lately.
"Mattie, I hate to see you working so late at night.
I couldn't work today on account of the pains in my back and
I can hardly get my breath at times" Stocker explained.
Mrs. Stocker endeavored to cheer her husband, but in vain.
On reaching the house the pair talked for about an hour. The
conversation concerned Stocker's health and his intention of
ending his life. Stocker rolled a cigarette, saying it would
be the last he would ever smoke. He informed his wife of his
desire to be buried by Harris Ashton. Then he started to leave
the house. Stepping back into the room Stocker asked for a
last kiss, and then sitting down in the chair he took the fatal
dose when his wife was not watching him.
The couple were married 16 years ago. Their married life for
several years back, has been unhappy. About a year ago the
deceased create a scene at his home by calling in a neighbor
woman and then taking "Make-believe" dose of laudanum.
Last November the unfortunate fellow decided that he could
not get along in Easton and went to Washington D.C., in the
hope of getting work and forgetting old acquaintances. While
in that city deceased was taken sick and his weight was reduced
from 200 pounds to 138 pounds. He came back to Easton about
six weeks ago, broken down in health.
Deceased was 28 years old. Besides his wife and children,
he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Stocker, of Phillipsburg,
and the following brothers and sisters: W.H.D. Stocker of this
place; Wellington Stocker who resides in Ohio; Mrs. Arthur
King, of California, and Mrs. William Volk, of Phillipsburg.
He was a member of Packer Council No. 988, Royal Arcanum |
