Walter Steckel, Concrete Firm Partner, Dies
Steckel Sand Founder was 83, Had Been Ill Since December
Walter L. Steckel, 83, partner in the Steckel Concrete Company,
Phillipsburg, and one of the founders of a firm which ultimately
became the former Steckel Sand Company, died today at 9:50
a.m. at his home in Harmony Township, Phillipsburg R.D. 2.
Mr. Steckel, who had been ill since last December, had been
inactive in managing the business for several years, although
he still maintained an interest in the affairs of the firm.
He and his brother, Charles C. Steckel, established the W.
L. Steckel and Brother Company at Carpentersville, NJ a sand
business, in 1906, and the firm operated under that name until
1923 when it became the Steckel Sand Company.
The company eventually maintained branches in Holland, NJ,
Martins Creek, Allentown, Bordentown, and Phillipsburg. It's
offices were located on Bushkill drive and then at the Easton
Trust Building.
In 1948, Mr. Steckel's brother sold his interest in the sand
business and the firm became known as the Steckel Concrete
Company. It was then that Mr. Steckel took in his son, Kenneth
as a partner. The company is located in Phillipsburg on North
Broad Street.
Born in Carpentersville, Mr. Steckel was the son of the late
William and Margaret Hildebrand Steckel. His father was engaged
in business boating sand up and down the Delaware Canal.
Mr. Steckel was a member of Norton Methodist Church, Norton,
NJ.
A lifelong resident of the Easton-Phillipsburg area, he resided
at this present address for the last year. His wife, the former
Clara Fulmer died in 1928.
Surviving, in addition to his brother and son, are a daughter,
Miss Gladys Steckel, at home; another son Howard of Harmony;
another brother, James G., of Bethlehem; two sisters, the Misses
Maude and Gertrude Steckel, both of Easton and five grandchildren.
