George L Steckel, Church, civic leader
George L Steckel, 85 of 3242 Freemansburg Ave., Palmer Township,
died today in the Leader Nursing Home, Bethlehem.
He was a cost accountant for Penn Pump, Palmer Township, until
retiring in 1965 after 43 years of service.
Born Nov 3, 1899, in Williams Township, he was a son of the
late Irwin and Flora Seifert Steckel.
Mr. Steckel was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Easton,
where he was financial secretary for 50 years, and in the church
choir and served on the church council. He was the former treasurer
of the Lutheran Brotherhood, and served on it bereavement committee.
He was also a member of the Northampton and Williams Township
Historical societies: MORA Club, Bethlehem and the first treasurer
of the South Side Civic Association.
He was a former member of the board of Hay's Cemetery, Easton
and was honored in 1984 for 54 years of service.
A 32nd Degree mason, he as a member of Easton Lodge 153 F&AM;
Lehigh Consistory, Allentown, and Hugh De Payans Commandry
19, Knights Templar, Easton.
Surviving are his wife, the former Grace A. Labold, a son
Robert S. of Palmer Township, a brother Robert I. of Phillipsburg;
a sister, Mrs. Anna Mae Sandwick, East Bangor; five grandchildren
and a great grandchild. A daughter Betty Lois died in 1945.
Services will be held at 1:30 pm Sunday in the church. Interment
will be in Hay's Cemetery. The Strunk Funeral Home, Easton
is in charge of arrangements. |
