William R. Shimer Sr.
Easton Native Was Retired metallurgis
William Robert Shimer, Sr., 63, a native of Easton, who recently retired as metallurgical engineer at Bethlehem steel co., died Saturday in Memorial Hospital, New York City, to which he was admitted last Wednesday.
He was well known in chemical and metallurgical circles for many years and was with the Bethlehem Steel co., from 1907 until Oct 1, 1945, when he retired. Before going to the Bethlehem steel co., he was engineer of tests with the Ingersoll-Rand, Co.
Mr. Shimer attended Lafayette College and Lehigh University. During his employment at Bethlehem Steel co, he had a part in originating and developing many metallurgical advancements and in establishing the “observer system.” He was advance to metallurgical engineer in 1915 and was placed in charge of laboratories the same year. He was instrumental in 1912 I beginning the metallographic department, forerunner and nucleus of the metallurgical department. H served a chairman of the metallurgical committee of Bethlehem Steel Corp, for more than 20 years.
He was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute American Society for Testing Materials, American Zinc Institute, Society, of Automotive Engineers, American Society for Metals and Army ordnance Association. He served on technical boards of the tinplate sheet and strip committees of the American Iron and Steel Institute. He also was a member of the Saucon Valley Country Club, Bethlehem Club and Racquet Club of Philadelphia.
Mr. Shimer was a son of Mrs. Elizabeth Sandt Shimer, of Easton and the late Porter W. Shimer. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Grace F. Penner Shimer, a son, William R. Shimer Jr., of Bethlehem. Two daughters Mrs. Elizabeth M. Fry and Miss Margaret E. Shimer, of Bethlehem. Two sisters, Mrs. J. Willard Paff and Mrs. Paul Hoffman of Easton, and brother, Edward Shimer of Easton, R.D. |
