James Sandt Passes Away
Former Office Manager For Bush & Bull Dies At 82 years of Age
James Madison Sandt, 82, a well known and highly respected resident of Easton, died at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 320 Cattell Street, College Hill, of general debility after an illness of three months.
Mr. Sandt was born near Sandt’s Eddy, Forks Township, on January 3, 1852, and was a son of the late Peter and Sallie Ann Snyder Sandt. His father was killed at the battle of Chancellorsville during the Civil War.
When a young man, Mr. Sandt entered the employ of his uncle, the late Philip Sandt, and his general store at Stockertown. On March 31, 1875, he took a position with Bush & Bull, this city, and worked his way up to office manager. On March 31, 1935 he was presented with a watch by the employees, on his 5oth anniversary. In 1927 he retired after having served that firm for 52 years.
On May 23 1874, Mr. Sandt was marred to Miss Elamanda Jones, daughter of the late Jeremiah and Elizabeth Jones. The ceremony preformed at Nazareth by the late Rev. David Kuntz, then pastor of the Lutheran Church there. Had Mr. Sandt lived until May 23, the couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Sandt was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, this city and was a member of Camp 233, Sons of Union Veteran of the Civil War. He is survived by his widow and by two sons: Alfred P. Sandt, of Montreal, Canada, and Herbert E. Sandt, of Easton, and by three grandsons. |
