Former Principal Of Easton High Is Dead at 76
B. F. Sandt, Graduate of Lafayette, Was Active in Musical circles
Benjamin Franklin Sandt, 76 years old, a retired teacher and former principal of the Easton High School, died of a cerebral hemorrhage yesterday afternoon at his home 310 Cattel Street. He was stricken yesterday morning.
Mr. Sandt was born at Stockertown May 9, 1851, a son of Dr. John and Sophia Sandt. He was educated in the public schools and was graduated from the Easton High School in1879 and from Lafayette College in 19993. In June 1933 he attended the reunion of his class and receiver a fifty-year certificate from the college.
He founded the Riegelsville Academy and was principal from 1883 to 1887, when he was elected as principal of the Easton high School He held that position until 1902 but continued teaching as head of the department of languages until 1924 when he retired.
Throughout his life he was active in St John’s Lutheran Church, this city, serving on the church council and also teaching in the Sunday School He was a member of the choir for thirty-five years and a member of the Orpheus Glee club and the Orpheus Oratorio Society.
He is survived by his widow, Eudora Shannon Sandt and by two adopted daughters, Mrs. Martha S. Irvine, of Belle Mead, N.J. and Mrs. Emma Keller Gibbs, of Westfield, N.J. |
