Minnie Portner dead
Mrs. A. J. Hulmes, known as Minnie Portner, daughter of Mrs.
Portner, who keeps a saloon near the Morris and Essex depot
in Phillipsburg, died this (Thursday) morning from the effects
of alcoholism. This woman had an eventful life. Twenty years
ago she was one of the prettiest girls in Phillipsburg. She
married A. J. Humes who was then a conductor on the Central
road. He rented a house in Easton and had it supplied with
costly furniture. Mrs. Portner, it appears, wanted Minnie,
owing to her beauty, to remain with her in the saloon. Jealousy
on the part of Hulmes followed. One day while mine was at the
Jersey Central depot Hulmes flew in a rage, drew a revolver
and shot her in the head, neck and arm, and then fled. The
late Dr. C.c. field probed for the bullet in Minnie’s
head and in doing so some of the brain matter was drawn out
by the instrument. Her death was expected the day of the shooting,
but she soon recovered, and resumed her old position in the
bar. The results of the shooting were an impediment in Minnie’s
speech, and her fondness for drink. The bullet is still in
her arm. Hulmes in now a conductor on a road in Texas.
