Fatal Crash Near City
John R. Kiefer Died after Accident On North Delaware River Road
John R. Kiefer, 28 years old, son of George W. Kiefer, of 167 Bullman street, Phillipsburg, was fatally injured shortly before 3 o’clock this morning on the North Delaware Drive, near Wauregna Lodge of the Y.W. C. A. when he was thrown from his roadster as it ran in front of and was struck broadside by a Grayhound bus, operated by Thomas J. Cunningham, of 1320 Sellers street, Frankford, Philadelphia.
The bus was going north, carrying no passengers. A truck of the Perkasie Storage company, of Perkasie, Pa., which had run out of gas, was standing on the west side of the road, headed south and was well off the main part of the concrete highway. The bus driver, in reporting the accident to the police said that he was as far to his right as he could get in order to keep as far from the parked truck as possible.
As he was about to pass the truck he saw the light of an approaching south-bound automobile. This was Keifer’s roadster and as Kiefer got near the truck, he turned to the left side to pass the parked vehicle and then, apparently, lost control of his auto which went over directly in the path of the bus.
Kiefer was thrown out and struck his head fracturing his skull. The bus was stopped within its own length, authorities who investigated report. The injured man was place in the auto of Herman Bugen, of 842 Northampton Street, and Bugen accompanied by the bus driver and John Winter, who resides near the scene of the accident, brought the injured man of Easton hospital, where he died at 6:10 this morning.
Mr. Kiefer was unmarried and resided with his father at the Bullman street address. His only survivors in addition to his father are an aunt, Mrs. Lily Witter, and a cousin, Sara Witter. He was engaged in the operation of several gasoline stations in Philipsburg.
