Providence R. I., Feb. 6 - Dr. Elbert A. Gruver, former superintendent
of schools for the deaf in Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Rome, N.Y.
and the Lexington School for the Deaf in NewYork, died in Rhode
Island Hospital here last night at the age of 79.
Dr.Gruver was president of the Volta Association, largest
professional association of teachers of the deaf in the United
States, from 1932 to 1938.
He received the honoary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters,
from Coe College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1930. After his retirment
in 1936 he lived in Cedar Falls until 1945, when he moved to
Apponaug, R.I.
Dr. Gruver was graduated from Gettsburg (Pa) College in 1895,
He was superintenedent of the Lexington School from 1898 to
1904, the School for the Dear in Rome from 1904 to 1919, the
Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs for the next six
years and the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia
from 1925 until his retirment.
Born in Munt Bethel, Pa., he was a son of Charles and Christina
Bachman Gruver. In later years he was active in the Masons
and the Rotarians.
Surviving are his widow, the former Margaret Hinckley of Portland,
Me., whom he married in 1898; two daughters, Mrs. Eleanor G.
Hicks of Binghamton, N.Y.,and Miss Margaret Hinckly Gruver
2d of Apponaug, assistant principal of the Rohode island School
for the Deaf in Providence; a son, Elbert A. Jr.of Apponaug;
three sisters, Winifred and Cora Gruver of Syracuse, N.Y.,
and Mrs. Ada Murro of Lock Haven, Pa and a brother Allen of
Oenonta, N.Y
