Death of Rev. Gruver
Native of Mt. Bethel Died in Missouri
The remains of Rev. Charles B. Gruver, D.D., a former resident
of Albany, who died at Marceline, Mo., on April 1, arrived
at Albany on Monday and funeral services were held in the First
Lutheran Church in that city on Tuesday, April 26, at 2 p.m.
Rev. Gruver had been spending the winter in California and
was returning to Syracuse, N.Y. where he made his home since
leaving Albany. He was taken off the train ill at Marcelin,
and died a short time afterward, before relatives could summoned.
The deceased was a former pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church
of Albany, having severed his connections as such several years
ago, at which time he retired from the active ministry. He
was a number of years ago pastor of the Second Lutheran Church
oat Sandlake, N.Y. Pervious to that time he served several
congregations in Pennsylvania.
He usually paid an annual visit to his former home at Mount
Bethel, this county, and during his visit last September, while
the Presbyterian congregation there was without a pastor, he
filled the pulpit one Sunday and delivered a most eloquent
sermon.
He is survived by three sons, Rev. Oscar H. Gruver, Oakland,
Cal.; Elbert A. Gruver, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Allen O. Gruver,
Hudson, N.Y., and five daughters, Minnie M. Gruver, Newark,
N.J; Cora E. Gruver, Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Frank Apperly, Syracuse,
N.Y. and Mrs. Ada B. Munro, Lock Haven, Pa. and Winifred Gruver,
Cobleskill, N.Y.; two sisters also survive, Mrs. Alfred Hester,
of Portland and Mrs. Elmira Mann, of Richard. Mrs. Mann accompanied
by Mrs. George Beers, went to Albany to attend the services. |
