Boy Drowns in Delaware
Stepped into Hole While Wading in the Water Near Schirnertown
Harry Albertus Coates, 11 years old, son of Mr. And Mrs. Albertus
Coates, of Browntown, Glendon, was drowned last evening while
bathing in the Delaware River at Schirnertown, north of Easton.
The boy had accompanied his parents and brothers and sisters
to the river for an evening swim. He was wading about a little
over knee deep in the water when he stepped into a hole and
went down over his head. The fright is believed to have had
as much to do with his death as the water, and the parents
were informed that heart had failed due to the shock.
The boy did not come to the surface after going down. A resident
of the vicinity one of the may people who search for the body,
located it 20 minutes after the boy sank, and word was immediately
sent to the Metropolitan Edison Company, which sent it's oxygen
inhalator and a crew to the scene of the drowning. They worked
on the child for 20 minutes and then Dr. Harvey C. Updegrove
was summoned. Life was extinct when he arrived.
Deputy coroner Dr. Theodore Reichbaum issued a certificate
of accidental death.
The little boy is survived by his parents, two brothers and
a sister, Norman, Elwood and Charlotte, all of the Glendon
Pubic school and also was a member of the Glendon Methodist
Sunday school. |
