George M. Weller, Jr., Dies of Injuries Received in Auto Accident
Fearing that an automobile in which he was riding was about to strike a post and that serious injury might result, George M. Weller, Jr., of 338 Northampton Street, this city, deputy sheriff of Westmoreland county, early this morning received injuries at Irwin, about 20 miles eat of Pittsburg, tat later resulted in his death. Three companions of the young man, who remained in the automobile were uninjured.

Word of the accident was received in a telegram shortly after 8 o’clock by G. M. Weller of the above address, father of the young man. The telegram came from C.C. Rodgers, Coroner of Westmoreland county, Mr. Weller immediately got in touch with Coroner Rodgers and was informed by telephone that Weller and his companions were auto riding about 2 o’clock this morning when a pole suddenly loomed up in front of them while they were traveling at a pretty fast rate. Thing that the machine was about to collide with the pole Weller jumped and was so badly injured that he died a short time later. When Weller’s companions notified the authorities of the accident the sheriff’s office immediately began an investigation.

Well was a well known resident of this city and was possessed of an illustrious army record of eleven years. He was a member of the Class of 1900 of Easton High School but left school before graduating and prepared for Lafayette College at Lerch Preparatory School. Instead of entering college eh enlisted in the army and at the completion of four year enlistment immediately re-enlisted for another four year term. During this time he was in practically every section of the Unites States as well as visiting many foreign countries. Throughout the war he served as a sergeant major in the infantry for several years being clerk commander at Fort Slocum, K.Y. During the war he was sent overseas as a member of the military police to round up deserters and while engaged in that pursuit in France was shot in the left side by a soldier who was wanted for murder. He soon recovered, however, from the injury and again took up his duties. Last July he was honorable discharged and in August he became a member of the Pennsylvania State Constablulary.

However, he resigned from th4e later organization on January 1 and two months ago was made a deputy sheriff of Westmoreland County.
