Valentine W. weaver, superintendent of the Macungie furnace, died
suddenly in Catasauqua yesterday morning from apoplexy. Deceased
was the son of the late Charles Weaver, of Berlinsville, Northampton
County, and was sixty-seven years old. At the age of twenty he
became an apprentice at the Crane Iron works and having perfected
himself at the trade of machinist entered into a contract with
the company as the agent of their minding interest. He was thus
engaged for several years when he removed to Hokendauqua and became
assistant superintendent of the Thomas Iron Company. Later he erected
the Lock Ridge furnaces near Alburtis and managed them successfully
in the interest of the Thomas Iron company. Subsequently h removed
to Pine Grove, Cumberland County, where the latter company had
an extensive property, and remained three years. His services were
next in connection with Macungie Iron Company, the erection of
whose furnaces he superintended In Juy7 1879, he removed to Coplay
as superintendent of the Coplay Iron Company’s works, where
he remained several years. Later he removed to Macungie and assumed
the superintendency of the Macungie furnace which he has been managing
ever since with great success. In 1848, Mr. Weaver married Miss
Mary Mickely, daughter of the late Jacob Mickely, of Mickley’s.
Seven children were the fruit of this union, of whom four survive
with the mother. The surviving children are James W. Weaver, of
Easton, Secretary and Treasurer of the Thomas Iron Company, Valentine
W. Weaver, Jr. of Coplay, Mrs. S.H. Bachman and Miss Lizzie Weaver.
