John Walter falls to his death
Rural letter carrier fatally hurt while in Easton on election night
John T. Walter, carrier on the war of free delivery routes for (No. 2) that extends through Forks, Plainfield and Palmer townships, was fatally injured in an accident on the west side of the central hotel, Fourth and Northampton streets, this city, at 11:26 last night. He was taken to Easton Hospital, where he died about an hour later.
Mr. Walter resided at Bushkill Park. He and several other residents of that locality came to Easton last evening to hear the election returns. There was a crowd of people standing at fourth and Northampton streets and Mr. Walter and several others were leaning against the temporary guard rail that had been corrected around this dear way on the west side of the hotel, leading to the barbershop in the basement. A short time ago that basement had been extended under the pavement and a concrete pavement was put down and concrete steps were built to read to the barber shop. Until the permanent iron guard rail might be put up, a temporary railing was erectedt. The railing gave way when the weight of three or four against it and Mr. Walter, Leighton Davidson and Edward Claus fell into the stairway. Mr. Walter, who was at the north end of the railing, struck on the concrete floor at the foot of the stairs, a distance of about 10 feet. His skull was crushed and was unconscious when carried out, placed in an ambulance and hurried to the hospital. Davidson and Claus both of near Bushkill Park, land and on the steps and escaped with slight bruises.
Deceased was a native of Forks Township and was a sign of the late Mr. And Mrs. Jacob Walter. He was twice married. By his first wife, who was a daughter of the late Owen Hagenbach, of Easton, and who died and number of years ago, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edith Jeff, a Vermont and Miss Carrie Walter, who resides at home. Mr. Walter is also survived by his second wide and by a son, Frank Walter, at home and by the following brothers and sisters: Samuel Walter, of Walters Lower Mill; Mrs. Jacob Uhler, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Mrs. Max Schneebell, of New York City, recently of Easton
Before receiving the appointment of mail carrier on a rural routes Mr. Walter was engaged in the mill business for a number of years and serve customers in Easton
Coroner Fetherolf, who was summoned to make an investigation in the case, has decided to hold an inquest. He has summoned O. L. Fehr(foreman), C. Flemming Sandt, Jonathan Moore, Frank C. Miller, Levi H. Seiple and James L. Evans to serve as the jurors. The jury reviewed the remains and it has been decided to meet at 8:00 tomorrow morning at the grand jury room at the courthouse to hear the testimony.
