Elmer E. Snyder, Funeral Director, Dies at His Home
Was Former Evangelical Lutheran Minister, Serving Churches in Monroe County and Easton
Elmer Elwood Snyder, 63, a well-known funeral director and a former minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Denomination, died at 2:40 this morning at his home, 131 North Third street, this city, after an illness of about six months.
Mr. Snyder was born at Martin’s Creek, lower Mount Bethel Township on January 15, 1872 and was a son of the late Josiah C and the Louisa Tenges Snyder. He attended the Martin’s Creek school and also taught school and that township for several years before entering Muhlenberg College, Allentown, from which he was graduated in 1895. He was graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Mt. Airy, Germantown, in 1898 and his first charge was at Delaware Water Gap and North Water Gap, Monroe County.
On September 1, 1901, he was installed as pastor of Christ Lutheran church this city, and succeeded that Rev. A. Douglas Speath, at that church. He was pastor of Christ church until 1916 when he was succeeded by the Rev. J. Paul Neff.
Mr. Snyder then entered the undertaking business as a partner of the late Zachary Tayler and later engaged in business for himself, continuing up to the time of his fatal illness.
He was married in 1910 to Miss Olive G Roseberry, daughter of Lewis and the late Mrs. Orpha Roseberry, of this city, who survives in with one son, Robert W, a Student at Harvard University. He also leaves one brother, Charles N. Snyder, of 209 North Tenth street, this city, and a sister, Mrs. Stella Werner, widow of Thomas O. Werner, of Bangor. A brother, Herbert D. Snyder, of this city, who was register of wills of this county from 1922 to 1934, died on May 15, 1935.
Mr. Snyder was a director of the First National Bank this city, and was director and president of the Easton Co-operative Savings and Loan association. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran church, Easton lodge, No. 152, F and AM: Easton chapter, No. 173, Royal Arch Masons, Pomp Council, No. 20, Royal and Select Master Masons: Rajah Temple: Reading: Nobles s of the Mystique Shrine; Easton Forest, No. 35, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Vanderveer Lodge, No 1105, I I O F, and Washington Camp No. 407, POS of A. He was greatly interested in music during his life and was a member of the Tall Cedar band, of this city, since its organization. He was also a member of the Easton Board of trade and the Northampton County Motor Association.
During his many years as funeral director in this city, Mr. Snyder had many opportunities for showing his kind and sympathetic nature and were among the poor and needy in this vicinity he was always most considerate. He had a host of friends in Easton and throughout the county and his death will be keenly regretted. |
