Death Of Well Known Resident
Joseph R. Shimer Died This Morning at His Bullman Street Residence
The friends and acquaintances of Joseph R. Shimer, and they were many, were saddened this morning when they were informed of his death which occurred at 3 a.m. at his home, No. 20 Bullman street, Phillipsburg. He had been in poor health during the past six months, but on the evening of the 4th inst. He suffered an attack that confined him to his bed since that time. About a week ago, when it was generally believed that his condition was improved, he suffered an attack of weakness, and he gradually grew worse until the time of his death, although during the past couple of days there was a faint hope for his ultimate recover. Kidney trouble and heart disease caused his death.
Mr. Shimer was president of the J. R. Shimer Company, dealer I provisions, and in business he was very successful. Mr. Shimer was twice married, his first wife being Miss Sallie Wagner Howell,a daughter of the long deceased Mr. and Mrs. David W. Howell. He later married Miss Annie Gangwere, who survives with two daughters, Mrs. Florence C., wife of William W. Bryan, and Mrs. Helen H., wife of J.E. Carpenter, both of Easton. Two brothers, Calvin Shimer, of Easton and Martin’s Creek, and William Shimer, of Easton, South Side.
Deceased was born April 10th, 1947, at Martin’s Creek, a son of the late Abraham Shimer and Mrs. Sallie Ann Rosenberry Shimer. He attended the public schools at Freeland, Pa., where he prepared for Lafayette College. He graduated from the latter institution in 1873. Following his course he pursued a post-graduate course for two years, and thereafter was for five years instructor in mineralogy at Lafayette. Following the fire that destroyed Pardee Hall, Mr. Shimer was especially valuable to the college authorities and it was he who gathered named and labeled al the mineral that had been recovered.
Leaving Lafayette, Mr. Shimer engaged in business with his father-in-law, Mr. Howell, who conducted a wholesale provision business in Easton. He followed this business until 1881 when he engaged in the trade for himself at No. 15 Front Street, Phillipsburg. In this business he prospered and on December 8, 1909, the J. B. Shimer Company was incorporated.
Mr. Shimer served for several years as a member of the Board of Education. He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Easton, and was an elder in the congregation. He was also a director of the Phillipsburg Transit Company, a director of the Phillipsburg National Bank and a director of the People’s Water Company. |
