Memorial Rites
WEYMOUTH, Mass. (AP)-
A memorial service will be
held Wednesday for Dr. Hervey
Shimer, professor
emeritus of paleontology at
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Shimer died Monday
at South Shore Hospital at the
age of 93.
An authority on fossils, he retired
at MIT in 1942 after 39
years on the faculty. Among his
books is "Index Fossils of North
America," written with Prof.
Robert R. Shrock.
The memorial service will be
held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the
George H. Downing & Son Funeral
Home in Hingham, where Dr. Shimer made his home.

Dr. H.W. Shimer, Native of Area, MIT professor
Wymouth, Mass., (AP) – Dr. Hervey Woodburn Shimer, professor emeritus of paleontology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, died yesterday at South Shore Hospital. He was 93.
Dr. Shimer was taken to the hospital Friday after becoming ill at his home in Hingham.
Dr. Shimer was an authority of fossils and the author of many articles on evolution and natural history. He joined the MIT faculty in 1903 and became a professor in 1922. He retired formally in 1942 but taught for two more years.
Among his books is “Index Fossil of North America.” written with Prof. Robert R. Shorock.
He is survived by a son, Dr. John Asa Shimer, professor of geology at Brooklyn (N.Y) College and daughter, Mrs. Mary Henry Magnat-Rais, who teaches at Wheaton College.
Dr. Shimer was born in Martin’s Creek, Pa., and was graduated from Lafayette College. He received a PhD. from Columbia University in 1904 and an honorary doctor of science degree from Gettysburg College in 1960.
