Dr. E. S. Rosenberry, Oldest practicing Physician in County, Dies in Hospital at age of 83
Dr. Edward S. Rosenbery, 83, of Stone church, the oldest practicing physician in Northampton County, died on Saturday night in Palmerton hospital, where he had been a patient since Wednesday.
He had been taken ill on Tuesday but until that time, had remained active in his practice which began in June, 1895, shortly after his graduation from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia.
Born on March 2, 1867, in Depue’s Ferry, Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Dr. Rosenberry received his early education from the township schools. He was graduated from Kutztown State Teachers College and before launching on his medical career, taught school for six years in Lehigh and Northampton counties.
Professionally, Dr. Rosenberry had served as a member and past president of both the Northampton County and Lehigh Valley medical societies. He also was a member of the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.
Although he had been active in his practice until his illness, he had not made any house calls in recent years. He had conducted all his medical practice in Stone Church.
Dr. Rosenberry was a prominent leader in many lodges, service clubs leader in many lodges, service clubs and Masonic orders, and for the last 33 years, had served as director and presidents of the Citizen’s Mutual Fire Insurance Co., of Tatamy, a post which his father and grandfather had held before him.
He was a member of Christ Evangelical Reformed Church, Stone Church, Stone Church and a member and past district deputy of I.O.O.F. Lodge 732, of Mt. Bethel. He was a past president of the Easton and Bangor Kiwanis clubs, and also was a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M. of Easton.
In Masonic circles, he was a member of Portland Lodge 311, F. and A. M. of Portland; the Lehigh Consistory, of Allentown, and Rajah Shrine Temple, of Reading.
Dr. Rosenberry was a son the late Samuel and Rosa Shimer Rosenberry.
He is survived by his wife, the former Lila Reimer; two sons, Dr. Frank Rosenberry, of Palmerton and Dr. Claude Rosenberry, of Harrisburg; three grandchildren: three great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Jessie C., of Bangor R.D2, and John R. of Edgewater, N.J.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Rosenberry home in Stone Church. The Rev. J. O. Reagle, D.D, pastor of Christ Reformed Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Centerville cemetery, Stone Church.
