Russell J. Lowe -- '53 Father of the Year
Russell "Bud" J. Lowe, 82, of Forks Township, formerly of Folk Street, Easton, died Monday, June 7, in Easton Hospital. He retired in 1977 as director of Northampton County Mosquito Control which he started in 1967. Before that he was founder and president of W.J. Lowe and Sons Sand and Gravel Co. in Martins Creek for 27 years until he sold the business in 1966. From 1936 to 1939 he and his father had a trucking business.
Born July, 1, 1916, in Easton, he was a son of the late William J. and Lillian Snyder Lowe. His first wife, the former Florence Ciemiecki Lowe, died in 1963.
He graduated from Easton High School with the class of 1934, where he played varsity football for four years. He was a member of College Hill Presbyterian Church in Easton. He served with the Army during World War II. He was Easton City Controller from 1951 to 1959. He was a life member and past president of the Young Republican Club in Easton and a life member of Order of Fleas and Citizens Hose Co., both of Easton. He was a past president of Chansonette Theatre in Easton and a charter member and former treasurer of the Pennsylvania Mosquito & Vector Control Association. He was a member of Dallas Lodge 396, F&AM, in Easton, Brown & Lynch American Legion Post 9 in Palmer Township, Easton Elks Lodge 121 and Glendon Lions Club. He was named Father of the Year in 1953 by the former Bona Fides Club in Easton.
He and his second wife, the former Phyllis J. Luckens, observed their 35th wedding anniversary Nov. 16.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, **** of Allentown; a daughter, ***** of Nazareth; a brother, ****** of Fort Myers, Fla.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A brother, Lawrence, died earlier.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Strunk Funeral Home, 2101 Northampton St., Wilson. Call 7 to 8:30 tonight in the funeral home. Burial will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine in Palmer Township. |
