John "Jack" P. Kist, 70, of 193 State St., East Stroudsburg, former athletic director and coach at East Stroudsburg High School, died Sunday in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Arlene (Evans) Kist.

Kist was athletic director, and also physical education teacher and a driver training instructor at the high school from 1948 until retiring in 1981.

During his 18-year career as football coach he logged 110 wins and one league title and, as baseball coach, his team won a District 11 title in 1955. Also under his direction, the golf team had 34 straight wins, and took a District 11 title in 1974.

Kist was instrumental in starting the school's track team; was the first swim coach, coaching for five years and, in 1951, he was co- founder of the school's varsity E-Club.

On Jack Kist Day, Sept. 20, 1975, 150 of his former players attended ceremonies at East Stroudsburg Memorial Stadium, which was re-named Jack Kist Stadium.

A 1941 graduate of what is now East Stroudsburg University, Kist lettered in football, basketball and baseball while there. He subsequently received his master's degree in physical education from New York University.

In recognition of his accomplishments at East Stroudsburg University, he was inducted into the university's Hall of Fame in 1980.

Before joining the staff at East Stroudsburg High, he coached football and track at Ebensburg High School, Cambria County, for two years.

A founder of the East Stroudsburg baseball and football Little Leagues, Kist was a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) football and basketball official, and a past chapter president of District 11.

Born in Easton, he was a son of the late Earl B. and Hattie (Young) Kist.

He was a member of East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a lieutenant in the Mediterranean and Philippines, and received the Purple Heart.

Survivors: Wife; daughters, ***** of Marshalls Creek, ***** of Oceanside, Calif., and *****of Apple Valley, Minn.; son, ***** of Sciota, and eight grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Lanterman and Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg. Call 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
