W. E. Boettcher, 48, was Track Star At Lafayette
Walter E. Boettcher, 48, former track star and faculty member at Lafayette College, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Bethany, W. Va. on Sunday.
A member of the class of 1925 at Lafayette, Boettcher was on the college track and cross country teams for four years and was captain of the track team in1925. At the time of his death he held the college record for the two-mile run and won the Middle Atlantic States Intercollegiate Athletic Association two mile race while in college. He was a resident of Palmerton when he entered Lafayette.
Following graduation, he was instructor in physical education at Lafayette from 1925 to 1921 and assistant professor from 1931 to 1936. He did graduate work at the college and received the master of arts degree.
He left Lafayette in 1936 to become professor and director of physical education in Erskine College, Due West. S.C He became director of Athletics and physical education at Bethany College, Bethany, W. Va. in 1927.
In 1941, he was commissioned a captain in the U.S. Army. He returned to Bethany after separation from the service.
He was member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, Knights of the Round Table and Student Council at Lafayette.
His survived by his wife, the former Nellie C. Kiefer, or Nazareth, who he married in 1926, and four children. |
