Murrel Ridgeway Kiefer, 93, State College, formerly of Stroudsburg, died on February 3, 1999, at The Fairways at Brookline Village in State College. He was the husband of the late Jean (Turn) Kiefer, who died on March 13, 1995. The couple was married on March 30, 1929.
Born in Easton, he was the son of the late Elmer J. and Mary R. Kiefer.
He was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University in 1929. At Penn State, he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity; Scarab, an Architecture Honorary Fraternity; on the staff of "Froth", the 1928 LaVie yearbook; and played varsity lacrosse during his junior and senior years.
He was a founding partner in the architectural firm of Rinker, Kiefer and Rake, later RKR Associates in Stroudsburg, from which he retired in 1973.
During World War II, he commanded the 876th Airborne Engineer Aviation Battalion, serving three years, three months in the European Theatre. He held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded the Bronze Star medal.
He was a member of the Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church, where he was also an elder and trustee; a former Rotarian; a member emeritus of the American Institute of Architects; a member of the Quite Valley Historical Farm; Monroe County Museum Society and a former member of the Stroudsburg Planning Commission.
He is survived by a son, Peter T. Kiefer, the husband of Julia of State College; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a niece, Ency Richardson of Harwinton, Conn. He was preceded in death by a son, Jon Lawrence Kiefer; a brother, Elmer Kiefer; and a sister, Nellie Hoagland.
Friends are invited to attend graveside services on Saturday, March 27, 1999, at 10 a.m. in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg, with Rev. Carol Brown officiating.
