Eastonian Ran Down and Fatally Injured Harry Kiefer at Ferndale Last Evening
Boy Is Believed to Have Lost Control of his Sled
Harry Kiefer, Jr. 14 year old son of Mrs. Mary Kiefer, of Ferndale, was almost instantly killed at 7:30 o'clock last night when he was struck by a machine driven by W. Everett Crater, of 440 ferry Street, this city.
The boy was coasting on a hill on the Doylestown-Easton highway in the rear of the Ferndale Hotel with a number of other youths when the accident occurred. He was taken into the Ferndale Hotel where he died ten minutes later.
Mr. Crate was traveling towards Easton from Philadelphia. As he reached the crest of the hill in Ferndale he saw a group of boys bunched on the left side of the road out of danger of passing motorist. At the same time he also saw a boy in the center of the road on a sled. Mr. Crater diminished his speed and pulled to the extreme right of the road and kept on his way down the hill. The boy on the sled, who was young Kiefer, seemed to have lost control of the steering apparatus and his sled headed towards the right side of the road. Mr. Crater swerved his car sharply to avoid hitting the sled by he was too late. The boys head was struck by the left front wheel of the car and was thrown to the one side. The car left the concrete and struck two poles before it was stopped.
Young Kiefer was carried into the Ferndale Hotel and Dr. Grim, of Revere, was summoned. He was dead however, before the doctor arrived. Death was due to a fractured skull.
The car was temporarily disabled and had to be left in a garage in Ferndale.
The boy is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Kiefer and one sister, Miss Margaret, at home. His father was killed about two years ago when a cyclone struck the town of Revere where he conducted a general store. The storm caved in a portion of the store and part of the stone work fell on Mr. Kiefer. Two years prior to that the store the family operated near Ferndale was completely destroyed by fire.
Coroner Weiss, of Doylestown went Ferndale to view the remains this afternoon |
