Melvin R. Hartzell -- Bangor auctioneer
... Melvin R. Hartzell, 83, of State Street, Portland, died Sunday, June 24,
in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was founder, owner and operator
of Hartzell's Auction Gallery Inc. in Bangor, where he was an auctioneer from
1943 until his retirement in 1977.
Born March 22, 1918, in Upper Mount Bethel Township, he was
a son of the late Raymond and Edna Horn Hartzell.
He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Stone
Church, where he was a former deacon and elder. He was a member
of Portland Masonic Lodge No. 311, F&AM and of the former
Bangor Masonic Lodge No. 565. A 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason,
he was a member of the Valley of Allentown. He was a member
of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Easton Forest No. 35. He was
a lifelong bowler and an avid golfer, scoring two official
holes-in-one.
He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Ann Morgan Reimer;
a son, ****. of Bangor; a daughter, **** of
Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; two stepsons,
two sisters, three brothers, eight
grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
His first wife, the former Mildred Mae Kneebone, died in 1975.
A stepson, three brothers,
Willis Hartzell, Albert Mensch and Clarence Mensch; and three
sisters, Marion Hartzell, Marjorie Mensch and Arlene Mensch,
all died earlier.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, Stone
Church. Call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Hough Home for
Funerals, 207 Market St., Bangor, with Masonic services at
7:30 p.m., and from 10 a.m. Thursday to time of services in
the church. Burial will be in Reformed Cemetery, Stone Church.
