Fall In Quarry Brings Death Of Local Boy
John W. Coates, 9, Dies In Hospital; His Pal Suffers Injures
A nine-year old Easton boy was fatally injured and a 10-year
old companion is in Easton Hospital, as a result of a fall
of approximately 50 feet into the Roberts quarry on south Delawre
River Road, Saturday afternoon.
John William Coates, son of Albert Coates, 174 East Wilkes-Barre
Street, died at Easton Hospital at 5 o'clock, Saturday afternoon,
about 40 minutes after he was admitted. He had suffered a fractured
skull and severe internal injuries.
Robert Christian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Christian, 260
East Nesquehoning Street, his companion suffed a fractured
arm and body bruises and abrasions, his condition being reported
as fair.
According to the story told by the Christian Boy, the two
boys went to the quarry at about 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon,
and a short time later decided to climb it, but slipped and
fell to the bottom of the hole.
Thomas Kushmac, who operated an automabile repair shop near
the quarry, found the boys at the bottom and notified the Easton
Police and Easton Hospital, an ambulance rushing to the scene
and taking the boys to the hospital.
Northampton County Coroner, David F. Bachman, also was called
and conducted an investigation.
The Coates boy was born in Easton and was a pupil in the fifth
grade of Porter School. He was a member of the Wesley Chapel
Sunday School.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers,
Pvt. Norman Coates and Pfc. Elwood Coates, both in England;
two sisters, Miss charlotte and Miss Shirley coates; his paternal
grandmother, Mrs. Jennie Coates, of Cleonia, Pa., and materal
grandmother, Mrs. Amanda Garis, of Easton. |
